Warmer Homes Scotland supports eligible households that are struggling to keep warm, but it is based on household and property criteria and an assessment of suitable improvements. It is not an open window trade-in scheme. The published eligibility criteria include home, energy-rating and household conditions, so homeowners should use the official service to find out whether support applies.
Citizens Advice Scotland recommends contacting Home Energy Scotland for free, impartial advice on improvements and funding. That is a safer starting point than submitting personal information through an advert that does not name the public body supposedly behind it.
Questions to Ask About a Scrappage Advert
- Is this a government, council, energy-supplier or privately funded offer?
- What is the exact name of the scheme, and where are its official terms?
- Is the advertised saving applied to a published normal price?
- Are you required to replace a minimum number of windows?
- Which frame, glazing and installation specification is included?
- What happens to the removed glass, metal and uPVC?
- Can you take the written quotation away without deciding immediately?
If someone says a discount is “government-backed”, verify that statement on the relevant government or official programme website. Be cautious if the organisation cannot name the scheme, avoids giving written terms or says funding will disappear unless you sign during the visit.
Recycling Old uPVC Windows Is Separate From Funding
Old windows contain different materials, including frames, glass and metal hardware, which may be separated through commercial waste and recycling routes. The Glass and Glazing Federation, for example, describes an industry recycling arrangement for uPVC frames. Recycling is worthwhile, but it does not create a standard cash value for your old window or prove that a sales discount is publicly funded.
How to Compare the Real Cost
Ask each installer for the final payable price and an itemised specification. Compare window style, opening layout, energy performance, hardware, ventilation, finishing, waste removal and guarantee.
